The Master of Accounting Studies is designed for students who have not completed an undergraduate degree but who may have completed for example a two year advanced diploma qualification at tertiary level. These students may enter the Master of Accounting Studies if they have had work experience in a relevant work place and who wish to qualify as professional accountants.

The course allows the graduate to be classified as "an accountant" in conformity with the requirements of the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO Code: 2211-11). Graduates can therefore pursue a professional career in accounting and articulate into the programs offered by the professional bodies, which lead to full membership of those bodies.

This is a 16 unit course taught over approximately one and a half years full time, or equivalent part time. Students enter via the Graduate Certificate pathway. The MAS provides students with the opportunity to study a more comprehensive program beyond the core areas required by the CPA and ICAA. It is a two year (104 weeks) registered accounting course delivered in 18 months of actual teaching. This is a fast track to becoming a professional accountant in Australia.

Both the MPA and MAS are currently being accredited as degrees with The Institute of Chartered Accountants and CPA Australia as graduate conversion courses. In order to meet the academic requirement for admission to the Chartered Accountants Program graduates with these degrees must have completed satisfactorily the following units: Accounting Principles; Financial Accounting; Financial Reporting; Management Accounting; Finance; Auditing and Assurance; Business and Corporations Law; Corporate Governance and Regulatory Processes; and Taxation Law.

The Institute does not require, but strongly advises students to study the following units of study to cover essential knowledge: Accounting Information Systems; Economics and Quantitative Methods.
